About
Mother & Daughters Native Moon
Period Poverty is an issue amongst the global nation and so called U.S. My beginning goal began because of my daughters and I didn't want them to go through what I went through when I had my period.
2021 Mother and Daughters Native Moon began as an affiliate of Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples, Inc. We are an Indigenous community project owned and operated by Mom and her two daughters. We provide period products, first time moon packs and menstrual products to Indigenous youth.
It is important to us to bring awareness of period poverty to the community, especially young girls who are just learning about their periods, we want to end the negative outlook on a period and have the youth understand the importance of a period in Indigenous Community.
Growing up I lived on a Reservation and my mom provided for me but there were times we didn't have a car and the next town was 15 minutes away and the nearest convenience store was a very long walk. We didn't have the luxuries of just getting in a car and going to get pads when we needed nor was it spoken about openly.
There were times I had to use toilet paper for a pad and not always was I prepared at school, I'd bleed on my clothes as I wasn't comfortable with asking my friends or teachers for pads, the bathrooms didn't have vending machines. There were times I missed school because I was embarrassed and didn't have a pad or was scared everyone would notice.
Conversations were happening at the age of 7 as she participated in her first Flower Dance demonstration, in middle school her period came and she was excited as she knew her flower dance was going to happen, many years later preparing finally in 2021 we started preparing for her flower dance and figured we can bring the two together. That's when Mother and Daughters Native Moon came about for all Indigenous girls, it was our time to make a difference with other girls who needed help. 2024 we are preparing for our other daughters flower dances as they learn the process and learn about periods and self care. Our youngest daughter has done trainings on periods and the female anatomy as well as getting to know the products we provide and manages the distribution of products and community distributions.
I never thought anything of the effects Period Poverty until I had kids. My goal was to make sure menstrual supplies were available at school for the children and their friends. Eventually we thought of our own people and the importance of taking care of our sisters. Every girl should have pads in their bags and available to them at anytime. No girl should go without, as we started discussing the issue more we realized it wasn't just me that had to use toilet paper or go without forward to now 30 years later, it was still happening today.
